Who I Am
My name is Partington Oswald Mtatabikwa, founder of The Zero Mindset and a motivational safety speaker with a message built on personal experience.
I do not speak about workplace safety from theory alone. I speak from a life-changing experience that reshaped my future, my purpose and the way I see safety. Because of this, my talks connect with people on a human level. They help workers, leaders and organisations understand that safety is not just a rule, a policy or a procedure. Safety is personal.
Wherever I speak, my aim is simple: to help people take ownership of their own safety before it is too late.
My Accident
On 4 June 2010, while working for a mining company in the Northern Cape, South Africa, I was involved in a serious and preventable workplace incident.
That day changed my life forever.
As a result of the accident, I lost an arm and a leg. I spent almost a year in hospital, facing physical pain, emotional trauma and an uncertain future. For a time, my hopes were shattered. I questioned everything. I even wished I had died.
But eventually, something inside me changed.
I realised that my experience did not have to be the end of my story. It could become the beginning of a new purpose.
The Zero Mindset
One morning, while reflecting on my life and future, I spoke quietly to myself and said:
“Partington, this is not about you. It is about others. You can make the best out of this.”
From that moment, I made a decision. I would use my experience to help others. I would go out and spread what I call the Safety Gospel, helping workers understand the real consequences of unsafe choices and encouraging them to take personal ownership of their safety.
That is how The Zero Mindset was born.
For me, The Zero Mindset is about more than avoiding accidents. It is about attitude, responsibility and awareness. It is about understanding that safety starts with the individual. It is about recognising that every decision matters, and that one unsafe moment can change a life forever.
I have turned an incident that could have destroyed me into a message that now helps others. Wherever I share my story, I am humbled to see people begin to take safety seriously at a personal level. That gives me deep satisfaction, because something that was meant to end my career and possibly my life is now helping to protect others.
I do not ask anyone to sympathise with me. The best thing anyone can do is learn from my experience and avoid walking the path I walked.
Why I Speak
My recovery was not easy. It required persistence, courage, faith, hope and purpose. I had to rebuild my life physically, mentally and emotionally.
But through that journey, I discovered that my story could help others. I realised I could inspire workers, employers, safety professionals and people facing personal challenges. I could remind them that disability is not inability, and that life can still have purpose after pain.
This is why I do public speaking.
I speak to help workers understand that safety is not only the responsibility of a manager, supervisor or safety officer. Safety is your responsibility. If you do not look after yourself, no one can do that fully for you.
Safety is a personal investment. It protects your life, your family, your career and the things you enjoy outside work. It allows you to return home safely and continue living the life you value.
Through my motivational safety talks, I help people understand the human side of workplace safety. I speak from the heart, and that allows me to connect with people’s hearts and minds. I have seen attitudes change, conversations begin and mindsets shift because people realise that safety is not abstract. It is real. It affects real lives.
My Mission
My mission is to encourage workers, leaders and organisations to take safety personally.
I want people to stop seeing safety as a box-ticking exercise and start seeing it as a life-preserving responsibility. I want teams to understand that shortcuts, pressure and complacency can carry a cost that no one wants to pay.
My story is not only about what happened to me. It is about what can be prevented for others.
Through The Zero Mindset, I continue to speak at workplaces, conferences, safety events and organisations that want their people to think differently about risk, responsibility and resilience.
As the saying goes:
“All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”
I have decided to use my time to help save lives, change mindsets and make safety personal.
